Assault On Policeman: Seun Kuti Will Cooperate With Police, Do Not Engage In Extra-judicial Action – Sowore Issues Warning Io IGP

Activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC,  has reacted to the order given by the IGP to arrest Afrobeats singer, Seun Kuti, stating that the force should not engage in extra judicial actions like they are known for when settling disputes.

Sowore assured that the son of Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti would cooperate with the Nigeria Police Force.

Sowore claimed the musician and his lawyer would cooperate with the police in unravelling the circumstances that led to the altercation and assault.

He was reacting to the directive issued by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to arrest and prosecute Seun Kuti.

Tweeting, Sowore cautioned the police boss against engaging in extrajudicial actions.

According to Sowore: “The @PoliceNG today declared wanted @seunkuti a scion of late Afrobeat king, #FelaAnikulapoKuti over an altercation between a police contingent that rammed into him and his family on the 3rd Mainland bridge in Lagos earlier today.

“I am aware that @seunkuti and his attorneys have agreed to help the @policeng in an effort to unravel circumstances that led to the altercations.

“It must be noted that while these conversations are ongoing for full cooperation with the police, officers of the @PoliceNG including the Inspector General of police must not engage in extra judicial action(s) like they are known for in settling disputes.

“Seun Kuti has agreed to cooperate fully with @policeng as soon as possible.”

FG Spends N1m Annually On Each Inmate – Interior Minister

FG Spends N1m Annually On Each Inmate – Interior Minister

The Nigerian government has disclosed that it spends N1 million annually to cater for each of the inmates at the correctional facilities in the country.

Sola Fasure, the Media Adviser to the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

According to the statement, the minister said this while inaugurating a 20-bed COVID-19 Crisis Intervention Fund Hospital and Equipment at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Port Harcourt.

The minister said that the project would be an enduring legacy and a testimony of the utmost importance the Federal Government had so far taken corrections, the welfare of inmates as well as the staff.

Aregbesola added that President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration had, to a large extent, addressed the problem of inmates contracting diseases in custodial centres.

The custodial centres were frighteningly centres for contracting diseases like scabies and tuberculosis, among others.

“Happily, this has been addressed by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration and is now a thing of the past.

“We not only have well-manned clinics and well-stocked pharmacies, the inmates at the custodial centres now have access to excellent medical care beyond the centres,
” he said.

The minister also decried the enormous challenges of running correctional services with huge demands for infrastructure, equipment and maintaining the welfare of inmates.

He, however, assured that the Federal Government had provided a long-term solution to the challenges.

“This centre in Port Harcourt, with a capacity for 1,800 inmates, presently houses about 3,067 inmates. This is just a reflection of the situation in most urban custodial centres where we have congestion at the moment.

“The facilities and even the personnel are overstretched, but we are coping and providing long-term solutions to this challenge.

“One of such solutions is the construction of mega 3,000-capacity custodial villages in six geo-political zones of the country. The one for the South-South is in Bori, not far from here in Rivers.

“The ones for the North-West in Janguza, Kano and the North-Central, in Karshi, Abuja, are ready. Hopefully, we shall inaugurate the one in Kano in a few days, before our departure.

“Even work is steadily going on in the others and has reached appreciable level.

“Let me also reiterate that the Federal Government will stop feeding inmates incarcerated for breaching state laws. As you commence your budget process for next year, include feeding of your inmates,” he said.

Aregbesola said that he had no doubt that the facility would go a long way in addressing the medical concerns of inmates and correctional service personnel.

The minister commended the management and staff of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) for working hard to keep the virus away.

He added that the new hospital was an intervention aimed at making robust healthcare for those in custody and the NCoS staff.

Aregbesola said that the beauty of all the interventions in consonance with other reforms in the NCoS would obviously translate to security, peace and tranquillity in and around the centres and ultimately the entire country.

FG Can Afford Pay Rise For Workers – Keyamo

Keyamo stated this following criticisms about the pay increase which many described as a trap for the incoming administration.

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Productivity, has disclosed that the moves made by the Buhari-led administration to increase the payment of 144,766 federal civil servants under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure cannot be considered unreasonable because the workers deserve more.

Keyamo, who spoke with our Punch in an exclusive interview in Abuja on Saturday, also said the pay rise is something the government can afford.

That there have been criticisms following the announcement of the peculiar allowance for civil servants. Certain finance experts described the introduction of the allowance as a “trap for the incoming administration.”

But Keyamo said, “The new package for workers cannot be unreasonable under our present circumstances. In fact, Nigerian workers deserve more. The issue is the funding. I think when the new government removes subsidy and explores some others means to fund our budgets, the government can afford it.”

Workers under the CONPSS were paid peculiar allowances alongside their salaries for the month of April with arrears of January to March 2023 paid alongside.

Earlier, the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, explained that the government introduced the allowance for civil servants in view of the current economic reality, and it is meant to help government workers to cushion the effects of rising inflation, the rising cost of living, hikes in transportation fare, housing and electricity tariffs.

They urged Apapa and his supporters to retrace their steps so that history will be kind to them.

Amid the ongoing crisis in the Labour Party, the Anambra State Executive Council led by Chief Ugochukwu Emeh, has drummed support for the Julius Abure-led National executive of the party.

He also expressed support for the party’s presidential standard-bearer in the February 25, 2023, general election, Mr Peter Obi and his running mate, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed in their ongoing legal battle at the election petitions tribunal.

Addressing a press conference held shortly after their meeting in Awka, Saturday, Chief Emeh backed by members of the State Executive Committee read out their resolutions dissociating the state from Alhaji Lamidi Apapa.

They urged Apapa and his supporters to retrace their steps so that history will be kind to them.

The resolution read in part, “At the conclusion of the meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council of the Labour Party, the Local Government Chairmen/Secretaries, the National/State Assemblies-elect on the platform of the party resolved that:

“A vote of confidence is hereby passed on the national leadership of LP led by the National Chairman of our great party, Julius Abure; the National Secretary; Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim; the National Organizing Secretary-Chief Clement Ojukwu; and the Treasurer.

“The vote passed on the national leadership was with regards to the sterling performance they have rendered to the party in their various capacities as National officers and leaders of the party.

“We also resolved that Lamidi Apapa and his group’s attempt to factionalize the leadership of LP was an attempt in futility and an unwarranted meddlesomeness that should not be allowed at all.

“We, therefore, urge Apapa and his co-travellers to retrace their steps so that history will be kind to them.

“We, therefore, stand with the national leadership of Mr Julius Abure and his executive.

“We also stand with and give unflinching support to our presidential flagbearer, Mr Peter Obi in his efforts to recover his mandate at the ongoing Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.
