The Independent National Electoral Commission in Akwa Ibom State has proclaimed the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Pst. Umo Eno, as the winner of the 2023 governorship political race held on Saturday, march 18.
Declaring the results at the INEC headquarters in Uyo on Sunday, the State Returning Officer and Vice Chancellor of Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State, Prof Emmanuel Adigio, said the PDP candidate polled a total of 356,346 votes to defeat his opponents of the Young Progressive Party and All Progressives Congress who scored a total of 136,262 and 129,602 respectively.
The New Nigeria People groups Party followed with 125,09 votes while the Work party surveyed 4,746 votes and others trail in a specific order.
He said, "That the Pst Umo Eno of the PDP having fulfilled the prerequisites of the law is here announced victor of the governorship political decision in Akwa Ibom State."
Our correspondent reports that the PDP applicant won in 29 out of 31 neighborhood government region of the state while his rival in the YPP, Congressperson Bassey Akpan, won in just two LGAs.

Over 80 Nigerian Female Seafarers Jobless, Frustrated — FESAN |
The Female Seafarer’s Association of Nigeria (FESAN) has revealed that over 80 of their members are currently jobless. The group further said that the state of joblessness is telling on some of the seafarers who are gradually becoming frustrated with the pattern of shipping in Nigeria.
Speaking exclusively with the Nigerian Tribune as part of the group’s celebration of the IMO International Day for Women in Maritime, FESAN President/Coordinator, Mrs. Koni Duniya explained that she no longer encourages young girls to aspire to become seafarers due to the paucity of jobs available to them.
According to Mrs. Duniya, “Giving the global average, Nigeria has not fared better when we look at female participation in seafaring. We are still within the global average of below two percent. This is not an encouraging number for us at FESAN.
“It’s not that Nigeria does not have enough female seafarers. It’s just that the numbers of those employed is not encouraging. To me, what’s the moral justification of bringing in more women into seafaring when we have over 80 female seafarers unemployed?
“The unemployment issue is the problem we are currently facing in Nigeria. We have enough female seafarers, but most of them are jobless. So, if many female seafarers are thriving and are gainfully employed, the profession will become attractive to young female students who aspire to work on ships.
“That’s why as President of FESAN, I don’t encourage young girls to come and join seafaring.”
On the breakdown of female seafarers unemployed, the FESAN President explained that, ‘As at today, we have about 30 female seafarers with Certificate of Competency (CoC), but are unemployed. For the ones looking for sea-time, we have over 50 female seafarers in this category. So, in total, we have about 80 female seafarers doing nothing. It Is not encouraging for me as FESAN President. If we have such numbers not employed, what’s the moral justification to encourage other young girls to come into seafaring?
“Sea time has remained an issue and employment for female seafarers has also remained an issue.”

Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has
invited former Vice President Namadi Sambo,
pioneer national chairman of the All
Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande
and his successor John Odigie-Oyegun, to
commission various projects of the Urban
Renewal Programme of his administration tomorrow.
Also invited to the event are former governors
and the two serving ministers from Kaduna
State, Hajiya Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed and Dr
Mohammed Mahmood Abubakar.
A statement signed by the special adviser on
media and communication to the governor,
Muyiwa Adekeye, listed the projects to include
the Safe City Command and Control Centre and
the new Ungwan Rimi Market.
Adekeye also listed the Umaru Yar’Adua Road
which links the Millennium City to the Eastern
Bypass, the Isa Kaita Road and 10 other roads
as projects to be commissioned, recalling that
‘’President Muhammadu Buhari commissioned
the projects of the first phase of the urban
renewal programme in January 2021.’’
He said the choice of Sambo as one of the
dignitaries that will commission the projects,
was because he is the highest-ranking elected
official that Kaduna State has so far produced.
The statement said, Akande, Odigie-Oyegun,
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Pastor Tunde Bakare and
former governor Ali Modu Sheriff would be
honoured for their sterling roles in the merger of
the parties that fused into the APC.
