CBN’s Directive On Customers’ Social Media Handles Illegal – NDPC

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has slammed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The NDPC said the CBN’s directives to commercial banks to collect their customers’ social media handles is illegal.

It said it was currently engaging with the CBN) on the issue.

The National Commissioner of NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, said this in a statement issued by Mr Itunu Dosekun, Head of Media, on Thursday in Abuja.

The CBN on June 26, directed banks to obtain the social media handles of customers as part of enhanced Customer Due Diligence (CDD) regulations.

However, Olatunji said that before the establishment of the Nigerian Data Protection Act (NDPA), on June 12, indiscriminate collection of citizens’ data by Data Controller Organisations was not taken seriously.

He explained that there were prerequisite steps any Data Controller must take prior to the collection of data from data subjects.

He also said that any organisation that defaulted was going against the law and causing a data breach, adding that it would attract a fine.

“There are provisions in the law to go against any data controller be it private or government office, NGOs, hotels, because we are pro-citizens.

“The whole idea of this law is to protect the rights, the interests of Nigerians who are data subjects.

“We are already engaging with the CBN to let them know that what they have done is against the law because there are basic principles you must meet when you want to collect citizens’ data.

“There is data minimisation, meaning you don’t collect data beyond the purpose for which it was intended, purpose limitation, what purpose is it for,” he explained.

According to him, asking for social media handles is not necessary.

He, however, said that if the collection of the social media handles happened under public interest, which could include monitoring some transactions, there should be proper awareness among the customers.

Olatunji added that they would be inquiring why the CDD regulation came up and how best to resolve that in line with global best practices.

Nnamdi Kanu Does Not Have Any Charges Standing Against Him – Aloy Ejimakor

Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) has made a case for the agitator.

He said that Kanu is a victim of wrongful imprisonment because there is no outstanding charges against him in any court.

The lawyer noted that the agitator’s fate does not lie with the appeal before the Supreme court alone.

Speaking via a statement, Ejimakor argued that Kanu was imprisoned without any conviction.

The statement reads partly: “To be sure, Nnamdi Kanu’s fate does not lie in this appeal alone because the appeal is but one of the several cases that were triggered – municipally and internationally – by the extraordinary rendition, and all the cases are independent, of equal stature and aimed at securing Nnamdi Kanu’s release.

“Therefore, the different moments in time when two of these several cases, in particular – the one initiated at the Federal High Court and the one initiated at the United Nations (both of which have concurrent jurisdiction over the rendition), were determined in favor of Nnamdi Kanu, the narrative that freeing him lies exclusively in the hands of the Supreme Court is fundamentally false. It is also malicious, prejudicial and profoundly injurious to Nnamdi Kanu’s legal interest, especially as it offers the authorities the umbrage and easy political cover to persist in the illegal detention of Nnamdi Kanu.

“Finally, it needs to be emphasized that for the obvious reason that Nnamdi Kanu is neither currently facing any trial, nor does he have any charges standing against him, his detention is – in reality – an imprisonment without conviction. A rough and tough imprisonment that is more horrendous when the locale is not a prison or a correctional institution but a hideous DSS cell, which is no different from a dank police cell or even worse in some ramifications.”

Gov Fubara Orders Probe Of Rivers Building Collapse

Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has called for an immediate investigation into the collapse of a two-storey building on Thursday, at Rumuoke Street, off Okilton junction in Ada George road, Port Harcourt which led to three people sustaining injuries.

Fubara in a statement by his media aide, Boniface Onyedi, said the state government must find out the immediate and remote causes of the incident.

Speaking after the inspection of the collapsed 2-storey building, the governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Special Projects, Engr. Emeka Woke, charged the relevant government agencies to immediately fish out those involved in the project.

According to him, anyone found culpable will be made to face the law.

The statement reads, “The Ministry of Urban Development is to take immediate action by conducting site investigations and site inspections

“The destructive testing and non-destructive testing of collapsed structural elements to establish their strength by the determination of the yield strength of the reinforcements and sieve analysis of the soil at the site, to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the building collapse.

“If there is any compromise by those involved in the project, they will be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.”

While sympathising with the four injured men whom he visited at the hospital, the doctors treating them also assured him that they would be discharged in a few days as they were already in stable condition.

He said the government had urgently mobilised earth-moving equipment to the site to evacuate the debris of the collapsed building while the site has been cordoned off.

According to the marketers, prices could rise to above N700 in the north once independent marketers start importing products from July.

Oil marketers have warned that price of petrol could rise above N700 per litre in Northern Nigeria starting from July.

According to Punch, the warning was given by the National Controller Operations, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mike Osatuyi on Wednesday.

He said that prices could rise to above N700 in the north once independent marketers start importing products from July.

He said while those living in the [b]northern states could pay as much as N700 and above for one litre of petrol, those outside Lagos should expect to pay around N610, as residents in Lagos would pay about N600 per litre.“What I am seeing is around N600 and above, depending on the exchange rate, the current crude price at the international market and the landing cost. Those in Lagos will pay around N600, those outside Lagos around N600 plus, while those in the north would be paying anything from N700 and above,” he said.

The downstream sector currently awaits fresh petroleum products as the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority continues to licence operators willing to get involved in the importation business.

The Executive Secretary, Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria, Olufemi Adewole, told The PUNCH on Tuesday that the NMDPRA was currently licensing more importers.

He said arrangements were on full speed for fresh products from July, adding that prices of products would depend on market fundamentals.

“Where do countries like Ghana, Benin, and Cameroun get their products from? Is it not from Nigeria?,” he asked, making reference to products being smuggled from Nigeria to neighbouring countries.

“Prices of products will depend on market fundamentals, and as we speak, the Nigeria Customs Service is delaying some AGO (diesel) vessels because of the 7.5 per cent VAT.

“And don’t forget, any cost incurred by marketers would be added to landing cost, and then to the pump price. The marketer would also have to add profit because they must make profit,” he said.
