Senate Rejects Motion to Release Nnamdi Kanu Amidst Sit-At-Home Protests

The Senate has turned down a motion seeking the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Senator Osita Izunaso (Imo West) moved the motion in an attempt to address the ongoing sit-at-home orders enforced by unknown gunmen in the South-East region.

In his motion, Senator Izunaso, along with other lawmakers from the South-East, expressed concern over the continuous loss of innocent lives and the destruction of properties worth over a trillion naira due to the sit-at-home actions. The economic activities in the region have been severely disrupted, leading to financial losses for businesses, workers, and the local economy. Investors have been leaving the area due to the instability caused by these actions.

The sit-at-home protests have not only affected economic activities but have also disrupted education, leading to missed classes and delays in academic progress for students. The disruptions of essential public services like healthcare, transportation, and waste disposal have also posed severe impacts on the well-being and safety of the general population living in the South-East.

It should be noted that IPOB had declared a sit-at-home order every Monday across the South-East in August 2021 to protest Nnamdi Kanu's detention. While the separatist group eventually suspended the order, a faction of IPOB led by Simon Ekpa has continued to enforce sit-at-home orders in the region, despite the suspension.

Federal Universities Still Tuition-free, Says FG

The Federal Government on Wednesday said that its universities remained tuition-free.

This was made known in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Dele Alake.

The statement said, “It was widely reported earlier this week across some news media outlets that the Federal Government had increased tuition fees in federal universities in the country.

“These reports are inaccurate and not correct.

“We are aware that some universities have in recent weeks announced increase in the amount payable by students on sundry charges.

However, the fact remains and we have confirmed that these are discretionary charges by each university for hostel accommodation, registration, laboratory and other charges. They are not tuition fees.

“Authorities of these universities even made this fact clear enough in explaining the rationale behind these new fees.

“For avoidance of doubts, federal universities in Nigeria remain tuition-free.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to his promise of ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of the economic situation of their parents, have access to quality tertiary education.

“In addition to the Students' Loans Scheme, under the Student Loans Bill signed into law by President Tinubu last month, which will go into implementation ahead of the next academic session in September, the Federal Government will also strengthen other mechanisms to support indigent students.

“Parts of the government's plans to make sure all diligent students complete their education on time, notwithstanding their parents' financial situation, include work-study, merit-based scholarships and grants.

Don’t listen to Wole Soyinka” Reno Omokri Warns Davido Over Controversial Video

Recall that on Saturday, July 22, Davido shared a snippet of a music video of his signee, Logos Olori entitled ‘Jaye Lo’ on his Twitter page.

The video which was deemed to be a desecration of the Islamic religion was widely critiqued. Some Nothern youths had taken to the streets to protest and vandalize banners bearing the singer’s face, while some like actor Ali Nuhu and Buhari’s ex-aide, Bashir Ahmad called out the singer on social media demanding an immediate apology.

However, as the call persisted, Davido bowed to pressure and deleted the music video snippet after being accused of disrespecting Islam by posting the video showing people praying and dancing in front of a mosque.

Rising to defend Davido, Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka in a statement released, accused former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El Rufai of making derogatory comments against Christians in the past but was never asked to apologise.

He also noted that it wasn’t Davido’s music that lynched Deborah Yakubu, a second-year Christian college student who was killed by a mob of Muslim students in Sokoto last year over alleged blasphemy. He averred that he sees no basis for Davido to apologize to Muslims.
